Wednesdays | 10:15am – 12:45pm
6th January – 10th February
Medium: Gouache on Paper
Fees: £150 (includes all materials)
Many people feel far more confident drawing than painting. The moment colour is introduced; uncertainty often follows. Questions like "Which colours work together?", "Why does my painting look muddy?" or "How do I mix the colour I actually want?" are incredibly common.
This six-week experimental course is designed to take the mystery out of colour and help you build confidence in painting through a practical understanding of colour theory.
Working with gouache on paper, we'll explore one colour each week, discovering its unique characteristics, tonal values and endless mixing possibilities. Through guided exercises and experimentation, you'll develop a deeper understanding of how colours interact and how to create harmonious, vibrant and expressive palettes that feel right for you.
Throughout the course we will cover:
Understanding the colour wheel
The key properties of colour
Tonal values and how they create depth
Colour mixing techniques
Warm and cool variations within colours
Creating tints, shades and tones
Building harmonious colour palettes
Practical exercises to develop confidence in using colour
This is not about creating finished paintings. Instead, you'll build a personal library of colour studies, swatches, mixing charts and reference sheets that you can take home and use long after the course has finished.
Whether you're new to painting or looking to strengthen your understanding of colour, this course will give you the knowledge and confidence to make informed colour choices and enjoy painting with greater freedom.
No previous experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
